A second Food Journal??

  • Nov. 4th, 2008 at 11:30 AM
Ok, so I started another one at  CalorieKing.com.au.

It's more user-friendly when it comes to recording information and has Australian brand results, which means less customising food items. It doesn't have all the pretty graphs of Fitday though, so I am going to go with both for a while and see which I like more. Fitday is really slow, especially at work when going through the proxy... but we'll see.

So... I've been doing a lot of blog reading, as you do. One site has been Mark's Daily Apple. Mark is a big avocate of what he calls the Primal Blueprint diet. ie. Eat like our hunting/gathering cavemen forebears. And a big part of this is GRAINS ARE BAD. So ok. (He goes on in a lot more details, but you can read it for  yourself if you're interested.

Through that site, I came to know of a documentary about the corn industry called King Corn
. So I was browsing that little doco's info page on PBS (which has an amusing maze game that kept me occupied at work for a few minutes at work today). On there I read information that I am sure I have read before, but you know how they say it takes hearing/reading something 7 times before an idea or thought gets into one's head.

The little tidbit that, coupled with my recent blog reading, has really gotten me thinking is... meat from corn-fed cows are fattier than meat from grass-fed cows. (On a side note, why is corn fed chicken considered a selling point then?) If that's the case.... is meat from corn-fed humans fattier than grass fed humans?

And my brain went, ahh, see, this is what that Mark guy is on about.

Yes, it's all rather complicated, and I've yet to touch on the environmental impact of cattle farming. Another source of great contention (I've had to shut up a few times when talking to Luke...!)

And secondly, apparently apple shaped people so be careful with carbs... So I am looking at the amount and porportion of carbs I eat with much more interest on Fitday.com.

*Edit

We don't seem to feed corn to our cattle at the same rate as the americans. Which gels with the conversation I just had with Luke. And HFCS isn't used as much here. It seems our obesity problem is more traditional sugar related.... so this must mean our coke tastes different to American coke too?

Too much flucuation?

Fit Day weight graph...

Did that work? Or does it only work cause I am logged into Fitday already? Anyway, heading says it all. I'm not sure whether I have hit a plateau again or just getting unhealthy or just shouldn't be weighing myself almost every morning.... ok, maybe the latter is what's doing my head in... should I cut down to every second day maybe?

Fitday Food Journal and Running with Nanos

  • Oct. 2nd, 2008 at 7:36 PM
I discovered a cool little site called FitDay that lets you keep a food journal online, as well as track your weight, measurements and moods. It's free, and my food journal is public and can be seen here. But admittedly it's a little hard to work out exactly how much I've eaten. A lot of meals I'd eat are not easily found, and each person cooks it slightly differently. The only way I can see it being accurate is if you measure every single thing you cook and/or only eat pre-packaged foods (or places like MacDonald's where someone's already done all the maths, but even that it depends on the kid making it.

In other news, I have invested in Yellow Nano. Just the little 8 gigs one. I also got the Nike add-on to measure how much running/walking I am doing and I can upload all the data to the Nike site.

But in all honesty, I do still prefer to write it all down. Online is convenient, but it does depend on me. And I can carry it around, so no excuse to forget anything I'd snacked on!
